When temperatures rise, and the days start giving you their best impressions of a pizza oven, the hot weather can have a huge impact our mood, concentration, energy levels, sleep quality, and overall wellbeing.
Many people find it harder to stay focused and productive during periods of extreme heat. Tasks may take longer than usual, motivation can dip, and even routine activities can feel more demanding. This is perfectly normal. Our bodies are working harder to regulate temperature, leaving us with less energy for other things. However, this can also leave us feeling inadequate and guilty about not maintaining our usual levels of productivity.
Whether you’re working from home, in an office, or caring for others, it can help to adjust your expectations and be a little kinder to yourself, especially during the hours when that temperature is soaring, and the mercury is rising higher than we’ve seen it go!
There are some very simple ways to support your wellbeing during hot weather:
- Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Small sips taken at regular intervals will help you regulate your body’s hydration levels.
- Enjoy hydrating foods such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, oranges, peaches, and grapes.
- Keep out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day where possible.
- Take short, regular breaks to stretch, move around, and cool down.
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
- Don’t be afraid to use fans, and to shade out your working spaces by closing curtains or blinds.
- Tackle tasks that have been sitting on your to-do list for a while. Simple, achievable jobs can feel more manageable when concentration is lower.
- Change tasks more frequently if your attention starts to drift. Alternating between activities can help maintain alertness.
- Schedule demanding work for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning.
- Check in with friends, family members, neighbours, and colleagues who may be struggling with the heat.
Most importantly, remember that productivity may look different during a heatwave. Looking after your wellbeing is not a distraction from work or daily responsibilities. It’s what helps us continue to function, stay healthy, and support those around us. We are no good to our workplaces if we don’t look after ourselves.
Take care, stay cool, and be kind to yourself.
